New Delhi: A weekend visit to the famed Attari-Wagah international border, near Amritsar, is likely to be more alluring thanks to a new realm in the Indo-Pak relationship that has prompted the setting up of a global tourist resort there. The initiative was taken by India in what seems to be a major step in the confidence building measures between the two neighbours, who have also decided to launch cross-border trade through Jammu and Kashmir. Inaugurating the resort, Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni said, "The flow of tourists from across the border would help in promoting peace between the two nations."The tourist complex, earlier known as Neem Chameli, has a built-up area of around 10,000 sq ft and is spread over 1.75 acres of land with facilities for restaurants, bar, shops and rooms for domestic, as well as foreign tourists, and in particular visitors from Pakistan.
Vast potential
Soni said tourism has vast potential for employment generation and the Institute of Hotel Management set up in the area will provide opportunities for the youth. Pointing out Punjab's potential for developing Meeting Incentive Convention and Exhibition tourism in a big way, she said the Centre would provide all help to establish a convention centre in the state.
