Mumbai cops check 4 rly stations for bombs

Mumbai: The police carried out checks at four suburban railway stations after receiving information from an alert woman passenger who had overheard that there would be bomb explosions at the railway stations.The woman overheard a co-passenger speaking on the phone in which the latter talked of bomb explosions at the Kanurmarg, Panvel, Dockyard Road and Mahalaxmi railway stations."The woman got down at the Bandra railway station immediately and informed the railway police about it," a senior government railway police official said.An alert was sounded at all the four railway stations and teams from the bomb detection and disposal squad were rushed following the receipt of information at 1845 hrs.The checks are still on at the railway stations and nothing suspicious has been found so far, the officer added.© Copyright 2008 PTI. Bandh cripples life in Left-ruled states

June 05, 2008 Normal life came to a grinding halt in Left-ruled states of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura on Thursday as the ruling fronts in these states enforced a dawn-to-dusk bandh in protest against the steep hike in petroleum products.Major roads in Kolkata and Agartala wore a deserted look as vehicles, both private and public, went off the roads in response to the bandh called by the Left parties in power.

However, two-wheelers and private vehicles were seen plying in Thiruvanathapuram, where buses and autorickshaws went off the roads.

The Left Front in all the three states had on Wednesday given call for a 12-hour bandh to protest against the increase in prices of petrol by Rs 5 a litre, diesel by Rs 3 and LPG cylinders by Rs 50.

Bus, train and air services were affected in both West Bengal and Tripura with various airlines suspending their operations till 6 pm. Air and train services functioned as usual in Kerala.

Various airlines suspended flights from Kolkata for the bandh period. Ahead of the bandh coming into force, 23 flights belonging to various airlines took off in the wee hours, airport sources said.

No flights took off or landed at the Agartala airport since this morning, official sources said. Long distance and EMU trains services were also affected in Kolkata due to blockades at different stations in Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda divisions, while as many as 16 trains, including Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express and Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express were cancelled. Shops, markets and educational institutions remained closed in the eastern metropolis which also witnessed heavy rains early in the day.

West Bengal, Raj Kanojia said bandh supporters put up road and rail blockades at some places but no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the state.

The bandh call by the ruling LDF in Kerala evoked no response from the IT sector and its impact on the industries was also minimal. Except a minor scuffle between bandh supporters and police in Nilambur in Malappuram district, no violence was reported from anywhere.

Besides, the BJP had also called for a day-long bandh in the southern state. BJP workers took out marches separately in all major towns, demanding immediate roll back of the hike on petrol, diesel and cooking gas.

Schools and colleges remained closed in Tripura and the Tripura university cancelled the examinations scheduled for today.

Congress starts selection of candidates for LS polls

The Congress on Wednesday said that the process of declaring its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha election would start soon.

"Party leaders sent to various constituencies for selection of nominees have already submitted their reports. The party will soon announce its candidates in certain seats, where there is a unanimous opinion on nominees," All India Congress Committee general secretary Digvijay Singh said.

To a question on reports on some understanding being reached with the Samajwadi Party for the elections, Singh said, "There has been no dialogue with any political party over the issue.

"The past experience of pre-poll alliance in the state had not been good for the party. I want Congress to field its nominees on all the seats where it has good candidates," Singh, in-charge of party affairs in Uttar Pradesh, said.

Singh said he would spend more time in the state to prepare for the elections as 'ill-preparations' in Karnataka had cost the party dearly.

The senior Congress leader termed speculations about Priyanka Vadra contesting from Lucknow seat as 'rumours'.
On the deteriorating law and order situation in Rajasthan following the Gujjar agitaion, he said the situation could be tackled through dialogue.

Ruling out imposition of President Rule, Singh said, "It's not possible in today's context to invoke Article 356 due to the political compulsions of a coalition government."

Petrol up by Rs 5 LPG too has gone up by Rs 50 a cylinder

The government on Wednesday increased the price of petrol by Rs 5 a litre and that of diesel by Rs 3 a litre. The price of an LPG too has gone up by Rs 50 a cylinder.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora has also proposed double price for extra cooking gas cylinders. He has also proposed a new distribution scheme for LPG cylinders. Only 8 cylinders will be allowed at the current rates. All extra cylinders will cost twice the amount.

The huge subsidy losses faced by the public sector oil companies due to galloping global crude prices, has led the government to impose the hike.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation at 8:30 pm on Wednesday night to explain the reason for the hike in fuel prices.

With political parties, including the Left, opposing hike in fuel prices, the prime minister had warned on Monday that government is not in a position to fully insulate the consumer from the impact of rising oil prices.

"We cannot allow the subsidy bill to rise any further. Nor do we have the margin to fully insulate the consumer from the impact of world commodity and oil price inflation," he had said.
